More than twenty-five years ago, I sat down with a sheet of paper and a stick of charcoal and drew a hare. I didn't plan it. It just came out with this particular look — ears back, a certain expression that I can only describe as attitude.
I printed it. It sold. And then it kept selling.
Why a hare?
Hares have always felt right to me as a subject. They're not domesticated. They're not trying to please anyone. There's something wild and self-possessed about them — particularly the brown hare you see in Welsh fields in early spring, boxing and careening across the grass.
The original charcoal drawing captured something I couldn't have planned: a personality. People recognised it immediately.
What it means now
It's now my logo. It represents my work in a way I couldn't have anticipated when I drew it. It says something about the kind of art I make — not polished and precious, but alive with a bit of character.
I still offer the print, and it still sells steadily. Some things just work.
